Common Causes of No-Start that We Can Fix at Our Wichita Auto ShopIt's best to get to the shop as soon as you notice that your engine is struggling to fire up. If you delay, then you run the risk of the problem progressing to the point that your car won't start at all. At Peniston Automotive, our local mechanics have extensive experience with pinpointing issues that cause no-start. Once we've identified the problem, we can expertly fix it.

Common Reasons that Engines Won't Start

In many cases, engines won't start due to issues with the battery or charging system. Batteries often die due to problems like parasitic draws, old age, loose/corroded connections, and forgetting to shut off headlights. A faulty alternator can also cause a battery to die. Signs of alternator failure include flickering/dimming headlights, malfunctioning accessories (like power seats and windows), and an illuminated dashboard warning light that reads ALT or GEN or lights up in the form of a little battery.

A faulty starter is another common cause of no-start. If you turn the key and only get a clicking noise, then a bad starter may be your problem. A failing starter can also create a grinding noise.

Inadequate fuel supply is also a common reason that engines fail to come roaring to life. A fuel pump problem can prevent fuel from being sent from the tank to the engine. You could be dealing with fuel pump trouble if you've noticed sputtering, decreasing MPGs, or a whining noise coming from the tank. A clogged fuel filter may cause no-start if it prevents a sufficient amount of fuel from reaching the engine. To avoid this issue, it's best to replace your fuel filter between 20,000 and 30,000 miles. Gunked-up fuel injectors can also make it harder for the engine to fire up. Using a fuel additive can help with cleaning pollutants from injectors.
